About the site
The Castlecrag Master Plan and a number of houses were designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin in the 1920s. The legacy of the Griffins remains a vital part of the suburb’s character, particularly its sympathy towards the natural environs and focus on community.
The Quadrangle Village Shopping Centre was opened on 15 August 1978. The shopping centre is known as ‘the Gateway to Castlecrag’ given its prominent position at the suburb’s entry. Now ready for renewal, the site is the subject of a Planning Proposal lodged with Willoughby City Council.
About the design
Three prominent and award-winning architectural firms and four jurors, all nominated by the WBGS and CPA, were invited to contest/judge a design excellence competition which was held in October /November 2019. Francis Jones Morehen Thorp Architects (FJMT Studio) was declared winner in December 2019, after all schemes were presented to a general meeting of the CPA.
The general outcome sought by this planning proposal is the renewal of The Quadrangle shopping village as a mixed-use project, which is economically viable and sustainable whilst adhering to the principles established for Castlecrag by the Griffins. The project continues to be designed by the competition winning architect, FJMT Studio.
